Death of Robert Tevis.—Robert Tevis Esq., a prominent citizen and Lawyer of Downieville, and a brother of Lloyd Tevis of San Francisco, fell in a duel by the hand of Hon. Chas. E. Lippincott, Senator of Yuba, on the 13th inst. The meeting took place a short distance from Camptonville at a spot called "Brandy City." The weapons selected were double barrel shot guns loaded with ounce and a half bullets. T. F. Fisher acted as second to Tevis and John Marshall to Lippincott. Tevis fell at the first fire and immediately expired. The cause of the difficulty arose out of an article published in the columns of the Sierra Citizen by Lippincott, reflecting on a speech delivered by Tevis on the 4th of July, at Downieville. Tevis rejoined through the columns of the Old Oaken Bucket, calling the author of the article a liar and slanderer, which brought a challenge from Lippincott. We learn from reliable authority that neither party were at first disposed to fight, but were forced into it by the officiousness of pretended friends. The funeral of Robert Tevis took place at Downieville on the 15th inst., attended by the largest concourse ever assembled in the mountains. Lloyd Tevis, Esq. passed through this city, on Tuesday, on his way to Downieville. Lippincott was in this city on Sunday last.
