Labor Leader Considers Visit Here on April 12.
Alexander Howat, labor leader of the Pittsburg mining district, will come to Topeka to address a public meeting on April 12 in response to the invitation of the Topeka Industrial council on one condition. Howat notified the council that he would have to make his acceptance conditional. He said that he would come if he were not in jail on April 12. The Kansas industrial court is dealing at present with Howat, and the status of Howat's liberty is uncertain. If he goes to jail he has said that he would not furnish peace bond.
'We're getting Alex Howat up here to explain to the public about matters in Pittsburg,' Frank Brown, publisher of the Trades Unionist, said today. 'He is one of the squarest fellows I ever knew and I'm sure Topeka will be impressed with him.'
Another plan of the local industrial council is to bring ex-Senator J. R. Burton, of Salina, to Topeka soon. The invitation was extended today to Burton. The council is anxious to sound out Burton's attitude toward the Nonpartisan league. Burton refused recently to give an affidavit in proof of indignities he had suffered at the hands of the Nonpartisan league members, when he was requested to do so by Attorney General Richard J. Hopkins.
