A HYMN in a Spring Morning.
SEE! how the fair creation round
Shines with new beauty bright,
While sweetly-blushing all the heav'ns
Glow with emerging light!
Hark! how the birds on ev'ry bough
Their warbling music pour,
And in their artless melody
Salute the happy Hour,
O blest Creator! may my hymn,
In this bright spring of day;
Express the ardour of my soul,
And grateful homage pay.
Breathe soft, ye gales, and bear my words
To the resplendent skies,
And in his presence make my praise
Like fragrant incense rise.
Gay shines the sun on flow'ry plains,
And sweet's his chearing light;
But yet compar'd with thy bright beams,
Seems clos'd with shady night.
Gay are the flow'rs on thousand hills,
And sweet the murm'ring stream;
But on thy glories when I think,
I'm ravish'd with the theme.
Gay are the charms o'er nature spread
And sweet the blushing rose;
But 'tis thy bounty, and thy smiles,
Which all these charms compose.
All weak perfection fades away,
Nor boasts its borrow'd light,
But in thy beauty's blaze absorbt;
Eludes the mental sight,
So stars die of th'ætherial plain,
When the sun darts his ray,
No more their shrinking lustre shew,
But all is one bright day.
Methinks, on the wide azure plains
Gay legions charm my eyes,
And to my soul in transport lost
Celestial glories rise:
While this blest truth, that thou art love,
Swells the symphonious lays,
And all the heav'ns in thunder shake
With shouts of rapt'rous praise.
