SALEM, Dec. 27.

"In glad light up a smile in the aspect of woe."

The number of British prisoners on board the prison ship in this town is 586. At this season of general festivity and holiday joy in their own country, and throughout Europe the hand of sympathy and generosity has reached even them, in their bonds: and yesterday they sat down to tables loaded with roast beef, plum-puddings, and other good things which distinguish the Christmas: their hearts filled with gratitude to those who had enabled them thus pleasantly, to commemorate the day of "good tidings of great joy—which shall be to all people"
