The Postmistress at Fort Russell, Wyo., Found to Be Short In Her Accounts.
Cheyenne, Wyo., July 23.—Inspectors Fitzgerald and Waterbury, of Denver, who have been inspecting the postoffice at Fort Russell, to-day discovered that the postmistress, Mrs. Annie Duval, is short in her accounts with the government $1,555.87. Mrs. Duval is the wife of an enlisted man in the Eighth Infantry and the affairs of the post-office have been managed by their daughter, Elsie, a young woman of about twenty-five.
Miss Duval denies she is responsible for the shortage, but can give no explanation as to how it occurred.
The bondsmen are Ira L. Fredendall, Thos. Heany and Charles Thomas, all responsible citizens of this place, and the government will not lose by the defalcation. The postoffice has been placed in the hands of the bondsmen pending the appointment of a new postmaster.
When the Fort Russell office was last inspected, which was in July, 1896, a shortage of $300 was found. Mrs. Duval explained that the office had been burglarized and that amount stolen. Her story was corroborated by an officer of the Eighth Infantry and was accepted by the postoffice department as true. She made good the shortage and was allowed to retain the office. The Fort Russell office transacts money order business and handles large sums of money following the garrison pay days.
