We learn the following particulars from the Gazette de France of the 18th inst. and from Holland, by various papers, to the 25th.
The alarm is general throughout all the territories of Holland and Hanover, from the fear of the approach of the British armament. On the other side they seem to be aware that the island of Walcheren will be the point of attack, and the utmost activity has prevailed to convey from Holland and Flanders, to that place, all possible means of defence. The enemy have already assembled 6000 troops to a situation which, it is supposed, will be sufficient to cope with 30,000 assailants. The magnificent town of Middelburg, in the centre of the island has had the stores removed from the spacious square, within its walls, and the same industry has been employed in Flushing to prevent the destruction of the garrison and inhabitants from the fragments of stone in the event of a bombardment.
From the information of a Dutch officer in town, we understand, that there are but two points at which the island can be successfully attacked, so as to admit the navy to co-operate with the military. The best is Serques which is four miles N. E. of Middelburg, but the access to it, on account of the batteries to the north of Walcheren and to the south of Schoonen, will be at this time difficult and dangerous. The whole island of Walcheren is only about 11 miles in breadth, and yet it contains 180,000 inhabitants.
As a proportion of the present armament is destined to act in Hanover it is of some consequence that we should be informed of the disposition of the people of that country towards Great Britain. On this subject we subjoin the following extract:
Hanover, July 16.
"The whole country here has changed its opinion in favour of the old house of Brunswick. The mask is thrown off, and the opponents of the French have declared themselves against the new government. The nobility, (I mean those who are noble in rank, not in mind and principle) are willing now to shake off the enemy and are longing for the good old government to which they were formerly accustomed : but by their submission to all the honest straight-forward men of their country they have ren- dered [illegible]."
fortunately at present at prayers of emancipation from French duress. Our highest hopes were three or four weeks ago, but the English ministry it appears, had their own private politics to pursue, and did not support us.
The letter goes on to say that a supply of 4000 men from the German legion in English pay, would have been sufficient to deliver the country from the yoke of Bonaparte, if added to this assistance arms were sent, which might have been deposited in Heligoland. It asserts, that by such means, 50,000 men, fully equipped, would have been raised, of which 25,000 would have entered the field immediately, and an equal number a short time afterwards.
A letter from Harwich, dated July 26, says, "I have to inform you a Dutch sloop arrived here last night, which brings an account that the expedition will be received with open arms by the inhabitants."
The forces under the command of lord Chatham, cavalry, infantry, artillery, &c. amount in the whole to 38,748.
The amount of the 2d division, under the command of the marquis of Huntly, consists of six regiments, the 6th, 50th, 91st, 9th, 38th, and 42d--- amounting to 4,982.
The enemy have attempted to save part of their fleet in the Scheldt by sending it to sea. Six sail of the line put to sea a few days ago, but a sudden calm taking place, they were obliged to return.
