The Gag.-The whigs in Congress are resolved to press ultra measures in the most odious and offensive manner. During the late canvass they would not commit themselves on any great line of policy or any principle. They would not avow themselves in favor of a rational bank-even repudiated the distribution of the proceeds of the public lands as largesses to the states to aid in paying the debts due to foreign brokers; they would not avow a discriminating tariff, a national debt, nor any one measure. Yet we now find them acting as if the people had decided all these questions at the election; and in their arrogance and despotism they have passed a resolution to gag the minority.

They will not permit any measure to be discussed in committee of the whole more than six days, and consequently they have command of the gag at pleasure. The representatives of seventeen millions of freemen are to have their mouths sealed on questions which involve millions of property, life and liberty, to gratify Mr. Clay and his legion of hungry stockjobbers. This is one of the most daring and most dangerous measures yet adopted at Washington. Mr. Rhett was silenced by this new gag in the midst of an eloquent speech against the division of our public domain among foreign fundmongers—for that is the object of the distribution bill. Mr. Wise made a manly stand on the side of the people against this daring usurpation of his political friends; but it was all in vain. Mr. Clay saw that he could still command a majority (of federal whigs, notwithstanding the defection of Mr. Wise and the republican branch of the whig party, and he resolved to press his favorite measures. "Now, or never," is his motto. If he succeeds in enlisting the money power on his side, and organizes a great national bank, he looks to that power alone to raise him to the presidency. Let the republicans depend on repeal as the only remedy for an accidental majority.--Vicksburg Sentinel.
