By George A. McElroy

HOUSTON-(ANP)-The Houston Civil Service Commission and the city's fire department announced this week that 10 Negroes will be among the 35 firemen trainees who will undergo a rigid 13-week training period this month. This marks the first time that any Texas city has elected to employ Negro firefighters.

Fire Chief Joe Lobue told the Associated Negro Press that the classes will be on an integrated basis. but, he pointed out, the Negro smoke eaters will man an all-Negro station in Clinton Park, a Negro subdivision of the city.

However. Chief Lobue said that the Clinton Park station will answer fire alarms and calls in any community in the immediate area.

There are three white housing areas and scores of industrial establishments nearby. Several of the nation's top chemical plants, an army ordnance depot and several steel mills are in the immediate Clinton Park perimeter.
