Full Text

The Steamboat Gen. Gaines, arrived here yesterday morning from New Orleans, after the unprecedented passage of seven days fifteen and a half hours. Our former fellow-citizen, Col. A. Sidney Johnston, Adjutant General of the Texan Army, and the Hon. William H. Wharton, Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States from the Texian Republic, with his family and his Secretary, J. M. Wolfe, Esq. arrived in the Gen. Gaines, having come from the mouth of the Brazos in less than 12 days' constant travel—a proof that Texas is a nearer neighbor than some suppose her. These gentlemen say, that the Texan Congress is proceeding with great harmony and dispatch; that the three departments are in regular governmental operation; and that universal confidence and quiet prevail throughout the Republic. Mr. Wharton is clothed with ample power to negotiate for the annexation of Texas to the United States, or to frame treaties. He proceeds without loss of time to Washington City. The New Orleans Bulletin says, that in the selection of Col. Wharton as the organ of communication with our government, Texas has shewn herself capable of chosing an individual whose enlarged information, ardent and enlightened patriotism, and thorough knowledge of the capacity and condition of his fellow-citizens, qualify him in every way to promote essentially the interests of his country.—[Louisville Journal.
