NEW-YORK ELECTION.

An election commences in the Empire State,on Monday next, to continue three days, for the choice of Governor, members of Congress and Representatives in the State Legislature, and is by many regarded as one of the most important that has taken place in any of the States for a number of years. Of course much interest is felt in the result, and much speculation is indulged, not only by those who are to take part in the contest, but by men of all parties abroad, who are mere lookers on in Venice.

The contest will be an active one, and will not fail to bring out a large vote. Although we hope for a favorable termination, there is much reason to apprehend that the administration will carry the day against the people. We have witnessed too much corruption in other States, in which the Tories have profited by its influence, to suppose it will not be introduced into New-York, where the party machinery is better adapted, and drilled to the uses of corrupt office-holders, than in any other State. The Whigs, however, are full of confidence, and if their exertions warrant it, we shall be cheered by a most splendid victory. We must, nevertheless, again caution our friends against counting too much on success there. The vote will be raised beyond reasonable calculation by the Tory importations, and nothing but the utmost vigilance and unceasing efforts will save the Whigs from defeat, by the corrupt practices of the administration.

There are eight Senatorial Districts in the State, each of which, chooses one Senator each year. The Senate consists of 24 members, each of whom is chosen for three years. The Governor is chosen for two years, and the members of the Assembly annually. The annexed table shows the strength of parties in 1836 on the choice of Governor, and in 1837 on the choice of Senators. Last year the Whigs achieved a glorious triumph throughout the State. But the aggregate vote of 1836 was 306,166. and that of 1837 was only 295,318, shewing an excess in 1836, over 1837, of 10,848 votes.
