Owing to circumstances which it would be unnecessary minutely to detail, I am constrained to resume my editorial duties. I most sincerely regret the cause which has led to this event, inasmuch as it has arisen out of the misfortunes of an honorable and worthy man, my late predecessor, whose industry and perseverance, amidst the most discouraging trials, merited a very different fate.--A foreigner, and stranger to our habits, our manners and our taste, Mr. Jones had difficulties to encounter which none but one similarly circumstanced could readily realize; he has been unable longer to bear up against them, and has, in despair relinquished the establishment to me, under circumstances, which however severe the loss to himself, have subjected me also to unexpected difficulties and embarrassment. I cannot conceal that I take possession of the establishment under very discouraging circumstances.-A reduced subscription list, and the withdrawal of the support of many of the most valuable advertising Patrons constitute two of the most prominent (and, to an Editor, the most interesting) items in the list of grievances.-As, however I have again unexpectedly assumed the perplexing duties of an Editor, I shall endeavor to render the Gazette worthy of the support of its former friends and Patrons, and of the public generally ; and I take this occasion to assure them, however disagreeable the fact, that, without their aid, the establishment cannot much longer be continued. As an earnest of my pledge to render the Gazette respectable and useful, it is my intention as soon as the necessary arrangements can be made to enlarge its size.-To accomplish this, a press of enlarged size, with some additional type, and other materials, will be required; this will consequently subject me to considerable additional expense, an expense, which, in the present deranged situation of the establishment, I can hardly feel myself justified in incurring; but relying upon the liberality of old friends, and hoping for an accession of new ones, the contemplated change shall, without hesitation, be made with as little delay as possible. It may not be amiss here to remark that a very considerable number of delinquents yet appear upon my books; it would really serve me essentially if their accounts were closed as soon as possible; and I most earnestly request all who know themselves to be indebted either for newspapers or advertising, to discharge their arrearages without further delay. I shall at all times be happy to receive communications from Correspondents, provided they be temperately written and free from personalities.
