The Gainsboro Branch Library "Vacation Reading Club" will climax its activities with a visit to the "Children's Zoo," located atop Mill Mountain Thursday. The Vacation Reading Club has become an established project at the library through the years, and continues to remain a popular favorite among the juvenile readers.
Approximately 100 children have enjoyed a delightful summer in the Juvenile Section of the Gainsboro Library, gay and festive with colorful cardboard drawings representative of the 22 states containing "All American Cities."
The theme "All America Star Cities" Vacation Reading Club, an original idea of the librarian, was inspired by the general pride exhibited by our citizenry in the nomination of Roanoke as one of the top 11 All American Award cities for 1952.
Each member of the Reading Club received a star with his name imprinted. The number of books read by each member is credited by his advance to the various "All American Cities" according to their geographical location.
Another new and special feature enjoyed by the children this summer was a "Vacation Reading Class" under the direction of Mrs. Mattie Moris, designed to help the pre-school and elementary school pupils with their reading problems. A large group of enthusiastic children attended this class weekly to enjoy the varied and interesting books especially selected for them. The library provided a surprise each week for the group in attendance, and as the climax to this summer of fun, enthusiasm, and profit, a trip to the "Children's Zoo" with refreshments provided by the library to each member for his outstanding achievements. The support and cooperation given by Mmes. E. P. Nabors Jr., and William Cooper merit much commendation. Miss Lois Finney, substituting for Mrs. Mitchell during her illness, gave invaluable service in making this a most stimulating and unforgettable experience.
