NEW YORK - (INS) - A last ditch effort was made yesterday to settle the week-long strike of 1,800 AFL Cement Truckers in New York which threatens to make idle 250,000 construction workers unless agreement is reached early next week.
City mediators met separately with company and union officials at city hall to discuss a new compromise solution.
The striking truckers, members of AFL local 282 Teamster and Chauffeurs rejected an offer of 30 cents an hour plus fringe benefits last week. A company spokesman said the offer would have amounted to $3 a day. The truckers now earn $16 a day.
