The ten round go between Maber and
Purcell, was the subject of discussion
among sporting men yesterday. The
principals in the event were not at all
pleased with the Herald's report, but
it was not intended that they should be.
This constant jabbering must be
stopped. There were quite a few who
called the affair a fake, but it was nothing
of the kind. "Why didn't Maber
use his right?" was the question asked
on all sides. "That was what puzzled
the writer, especially as he had many
good openings during the ten rounds.
It was generally known that Maber's
left was very "dicky" and was liable to
go back on him at any time.
Purcell gained many adherents who
think that he can beat Maber at any
stage of the game. There was good reason
for this belief, judging by the go on
Saturday night, but "those who saw
Maber and Peppers box must admit
that the former showed to be an infinitely
better man on that occasion than
he did on Saturday.
Maber called at the Herald office
last night and stated his willingness to
meet Purcell in a fight to a finish in
six weeks for any fair purse offered by
the Pastime club at 140 pounds.
"Why didn't you use your right?"
was asked.
"I was so weak," said Maber, "that
it would have been suicidal policy. My
head was dizzy throughout. In fact, I
had no business in going in the ring. I
had been sick all day, and I made no
attempt to knock out Purcell. Every
time I landed with my left it hurt me
more than it did Purcell."
The Pastime and Crib clubs have
joined forces. It is to be hoped that
the Los Angeles public will hereafter be
offered something more ambitious for
their patronage than they have had in
the past.
