Senegal Quits Mali Federation

DAKAR, Senegal (UPI)—Senegal Saturday withdrew from the Mali Federation and proclaimed its independence as a separate nation from Sudan, its former federation partner.

The Senegalese National Assembly voted the measure in an extraordinary session and then proclaimed a state of emergency for three months.

It acted after Modibo Keita, premier of the newly-independent federation proclaimed a federation-wide state of emergency.

Keita gave no reason for the emergency, but it was believed caused by tension between Senegal and Sudan over the selection of a president for the federation.
