Application to WPA for Funds to Carry Out Program Drawn Up
Engineers in El Centro's department of public works Tuesday ironed out details and cost estimates for reconstruction work in the city system and prepared to submit an application to the Work Projects Administration for aid in the program.
The program, which calls for construction of a water storage tank on the east side, repair of water lines and re-location of the outfall sewer, will get under way in October if the WPA approves the application, Director of Public Works Walter Heinecke said.
With aid from the WPA, Heinecke said, the city could spend money that would otherwise be used for maintenance of the city water and sewer systems as its share of the project cost, and receive a completely new water system, a re-located sewer and the new storage tanks.
Maintenance budgets allocated approximately $15,000 for repair work on the city systems and an additional $16,500 was set aside for construction of the storage tank, Heinecke said.
A $30,000 city contribution would be supplemented by a $60,000 WPA grant.
Meanwhile the city conducted intensive studies along the damaged section of the outfall sewer and studied needs of settling basin repairs at the water plant.
