Rebuke the Infamous Swindle of Last Winter.
Doubtless many voters will go to the polls next Tuesday and deposit their ballots without a proper appreciation of the advantages or disadvantages resulting to the State therefrom. Such issues as are involved have never before engaged the attention of a people, and their very greatness justifies the conclusion that years and perhaps centuries may pass away before their like will again agitate a people. Not only in a National point of view do these issues amount to greatness and importance, but to our own State Government, the Commonwealth of Kansas, it is the turning point for good or evil. Nothing is plainer of proof than this assertion. Two State Administrations-the last by far worse than the first-have brought us to the verge of bankruptcy and ruin. Profligacy and corruption, cunning and trickery, low political scheming and demagogueism have characterized every official act of Thomas Carney, and many of the leaders of the party now laboring to save him from the inevitable rebuke of an outraged people. To-day a most infamous deception is being practised. Thomas Carney holds in his hands a certificate of election as United States Senator. He has made a pretended resignation. It is false, and is only designed to deceive the people in the election next Tuesday. Remember that the only way by which the election of last winter can attain an appearance of validity is by the prevention of one this winter. To obtain a majority of the Senate, and thereby prevent a joint session for an election, is the manner in which they propose to accomplish this, and thereby fasten upon you the infamous fraud and bargain and corruption of last winter. We need not remind the people of the danger to their liberties as such an act as that of last winter carries with it. The universal outspoken indignation of last spring, and which compelled the Pretender to this sham resignation, attests their realization of it. One such precedent established, and your liberties, the very essence of which so much blood has been sacrificed for, will be entirely at the mercy of demagogues and corruptionists. Self-government will exist only in name, and become a by-word among men. Kansas, who opened upon her own prairies the great conflict now purging the country, and which is rapidly republicanizing South Carolina, will retrograde in this respect, and her masses become the thumb-pieces of designing tricksters, as the people of South Carolina have been to the aristocratic slaveholders. Let it not be said that the intelligence and the devotion to the principles of our form of government of the people of Kansas ranks not with the highest. And it will not be so said, unless you are led away by the deception which is being practiced. See to it that the party now bolstering up Thomas Carney gets as few votes as possible. Give your influence to the nominees at the head of our columns, each one of whom is unalterably opposed to the swindle, and is in favor of an open, untrammeled expression of the people. A more direct manner of resisting and condemning this usurpation lies in your vote for Senator and Representative. Vote for no man who has not from the start given it an unqualified resistance. Vote for no man who can be bought. Bartlett and Callen stand pledged against those who have had a hand in this fraud. The Senate particularly commands your attention. Remember that the rascals engaged in this villainy have boasted that they can elect a certain number of Senators, and buy enough more to make a majority. Therefore elect a Senator who cannot be bought. William K. Bartlett is that man. Bob. Miller sold you on the bridge question, and you have no guarantee that he will not sell you on anything else. Consider this question well before you deposit your vote. Let no man or set of men jeopardize your rights in their warring with a political rival. Go to the polls and give such a rebuke by voting the ticket nominated on the 8th, and which stands at the head of our paper.
Remember
That there is no honor in the composition of the Carney-Bolter party. It is an impossibility for them to do anything in an honorable way. Last winter, while Senator Lane was at Washington, laboring earnestly for the interests of the State, and particularly making every effort to get the Government to build a bridge across the Republican at Fort Riley, these things were at work "killing him off" in a corrupt, cowardly and treacherous manner, making a sacrifice of your dearest right. Again, while Senator Lane has been and is now at the front chasing Price, these hounds attempt the "killing off" scheme again at the very sacrifice of your lives and homes, by attempts to demoralize the militia, by circulating false information, and charging the consequent derangement of your business all to him. Surely no right-minded man will give his vote and influence to such a contemptible, cowardly, low, dirty, mean pack of sneaks.
