Shoeshine Boy In Sell-Out War Bond Purchase In Fla

CAMP GORDON JOHNSON

13-year-old Willie Lamb, a shoeshine expert, makes daily trips from Carrabelle to Gordon Johnson to shine shoes for interested GIs. For a while he was just spending his money. Then one day he heard somebody talking about war bonds and how the servicemen and civilians here were pitching in and how much good their investments were doing. Willie was immediately sold on the idea. When his shoeshine business continued to thrive and his profits gradually increased, one day recently Willie marched into the Post Theatre, where he does his most prosperous business and promptly presented his total earnings—$16.40 in dimes, nickels and just a few quarters—for bond purchase. The rest of the $18.75 was quickly made up by some of Willie's friends and he got his bond.
