Theatre Arts Workshop For Young People

What is offered for the gifted, creative child? Where can young people find an outlet for their talent? Is there a training ground in Detroit that will provide adequate facilities and instruction in the cultural arts for children?

These questions are typical of many posed by parents who are anxious to have their children's regular education supplemented by instruction and experience in the artistic fields that are not available in public schools.

As every parent knows, schools are becoming increasingly overcrowded and teachers simply do not have the time, or facilities, to give special attention to highly creative and talented youngsters. The more crowded the schools become, the more acute the problem, and parents throughout the Detroit area are becoming increasingly concerned.

Happily, Vanguard Playhouse in Detroit fills this important gap with classes and activities designed especially to acquaint and encourage young people in the wonderful world of theatre arts.

Far from being a baby-sitting function, or just a place to put the kids to keep them busy during summer vacation, Vanguard's summer schedule covers four terms of classes in dramatic arts conducted by professional teachers, highly qualified in their fields and widely acclaimed by educators for their ability to instruct and guide children in the important cultural arts.

Any child between the ages of 7 and 14 is eligible to participate in this outstanding program this summer which includes classes in Creative Dramatics which provides an outlet for their originality and talent; choral workshop which encourages an interest in music; and classes in dance and scene study, giving the child an opportunity to participate in on-stage and behind-the-scene situations. The classes are conducted in the Playhouse, giving the entire operation a professional atmosphere so necessary in developing interest and encouraging participation in children.

Classes are limited to 15 students, assuring the child of individual attention on the part of the instructor. Personal sympathetic guidance from a teacher is an important aspect in learning which unfortunately, cannot be attained in regular classrooms.

Registrations are being accepted now through June 16, and parents are urged to register their child as early as possible since, in the interest of providing the best instruction available, the Summer Workshop cannot extend its quota of students.

Registration blanks may be obtained by calling Mrs. Helen Gregory at WO. 3-3863.
