LATEST FROM EUROPE:
SINCE our last, we have received London papers to the 8th April last—some days later than before had come to hand. Though these papers are filled with shrewd conjectures and surmises, of news mongers and busy bodies, on the part which the Russian Empire was to take in the war between Great-Britain and France; there had not been received any authentic information on the subject.—It was nevertheless apparent that Russia exhibited some reluctance to an active cooperation in the war. Appearances, however, may be deceptive.—Great bodies have slow motions: It was certain, the British government had made provision for a subsidy of some of the Continental Powers; and equally certain, that the Russians have a strong force in the South of Europe; with whom, there existed a strong probability, that the powerful expedition on the eve of sailing from England at the date of our last accounts, was intended to co-operate. Sweden also had not given her voice for war; and was apparently kept back by the menaces of Prussia. France, as usual, exhibited a spirit of active preparation for operations by flood and field;—for war and ceremony.—Bonaparte, after creating new kingdoms for himself;—has carved out a new principality, in the centre of Italy, for his Sister the Princess Eliza, (late Le Clerc.)
