Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Virginia, to his friend in Philadelphia, dated Nov. 23.
"J. Brackenridge made a journey last August, from Kentucky to the eastern parts of Virginia, and brought back with him, ready penned, the nine resolutions, that are now so much talked of in the western parts of the country."
[These resolutions have been published in the southern papers, and while their incongruities have excited the contempt and ridicule of the learned and sensible, their novelty and unparalleled boldness have astonished the weak and timid. Should they be concurred in by the Legislature, the suspicion of a coalition between the States of Virginia and Kentucky to secede from the federal government, would be highly strengthened. In the old dominion, a spirit of ambition and domination, has long been its distinguishing feature: and Kentucky, formed for the most part of renegadoes and daring adventurers, from the old and new world, is a fit tool for the most corrupt purposes. A letter from a choice Kentucky spirit has been published, which gives a clue to their dark machinations. "Look up to Virginia" (says this son of anarchy) "as the head of a respectable opposition to the most diabolical laws that were ever attempted to be imposed on a free and enlightened people." Can we now be surprised at the opposition and industry of Jefferson, Gallatin, Logan, the Brackenridges of the mountain, and their numerous dupes, who have all their promised reward. A system begins to appear—the light is breaking forth.]
