DEMOCRATIC INTOLERANCE

Men Notified to Move in Hardy County Because they Voted the Republican Ticket,

To the Editor of the Intelligencer.

Sir:—In my opinion the money that has been expended during the last two months of our campaign might have been used to better advantage. If we had commenced on receipt of the President's Free Trade message by putting Republican newspapers in the hands of the working classes and in that way making a permanent impression, instead of a little flurry just on the eve of an election. That class of work must in a measure be done over again at the next election.

I was agreeably surprised during our campaign to see the effect of Republican documents distributed among the people.

Since the election there is a general calm, nothing being done, as much as to say we have fought a good fight and finished our work.

Very few people have the time to electioneer, as it is called, even on the eve of an election, and further, the present mode of operating requires a peculiar qualification which few people possess.

We get tired and feel relieved when the election is over. It is quite as laborious for some to do a little as for others to do much. I do not write this to get into the papers, for I am not at all literary, but if the idea is carried out publishers must furnish the paper (not gratis). I live near the village of Moorefield and am a subscriber for the daily INTELLIGENCER. This village of seven hundred population has only one white Republican in it, and he is not outspoken. After the election, before the smoke had cleared away, I had applications for houses by men who had been notified to move because they voted our ticket.

Respectfully,

ADAM FISHER.

Main Argument

the republican campaign should have distributed newspapers to working classes earlier for lasting impact rather than last-minute efforts; post-election, democratic voters in hardy county are intimidating republicans by notifying them to move out of their homes.
