Star-light Thoughts,

Ere our planet merged from chaos and old night, the first anthem resounded through the courts of heaven, "when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy." A diapason so grand, its cadences have vibrated through the long vista of ages to the present, so that he who would sway the magic wand of poetry may, even now, feel its inspiration. Again, when the world was still young, David, under the gentle influences of the Pleiades, gazing upon the more glittering belt of Orion, with the flashing eyed Arcturus watching from afar, strung his harp to the sweetest music our earth has ever known. We, too, in contemplation of the starry host, musing upon the goodness, power and glory of God, can, for awhile, forgetting earth-born cares, let thought exultant soar to heights sublime. Under the pearly gates, stand by the jasper sea, even enter the golden city, built upon its twelve pillars of dazzling sheen.

The graphic genius of Shakspeare, ever responsive to the voices of nature, has, in the glowing imagery of metaphor, delineated the blue expanse "as the floor of heaven, thick inlaid with patines of bright gold." A mind so redolent of poetry as that of the great bard could be lured to forgetfulness of passing scenes by the witchery of the hour, and in many a responsive measure bid his pen keep time to the music of the skies.

More than eighteen centuries ago a mystic star glimmered forth as the harbinger of a brighter day, and by its beacon light the lowly shepherd, as well as the high born student of science, sought and found the cradle of the infant Redeemer. The same jeweled characters sparkle in the shining conclave, and now as then, woo to holy thoughts of the Messiah in his manger home. Life is not always joyous, and to some the shadows of many sorrows have tinged its woven threads, so that at eventide only a vesper requiem trills forth sadly and in mournful numbers, yet if this star of Bethlehem shed its hallowed benison, all will culminate in home, happiness and heaven.
