From the time that we took charge of the SENTINEL, ere we had reached the estate of manhood, two leading ideas have controlled us in its management. First, to get up a paper acceptable in its moral tone and intellectual vigor to an enlightened public. Second, to sustain the principles and policy of the Democratic party in its full height and breadth.
How far we have succeeded in this, we refer to the verdict of a generous people who have uniformly sustained us. That we may have made mistakes, we have not the vanity to deny, but, on the other hand that we have been successful on the whole, and never more so than now, let the character of the SENTINEL answer.
That we should please everybody in the management of our paper, is one of those impossibilities that we learned, when a printer's Devil, and yet we never bore malicious feelings to our hypercritical judges who knew better than we what we should write or whom we should employ.
Let us say here, firmly but respectfully, to all and singular, we are at the head of the SENTINEL and stand responsible for the teachings of its columns, exercising the same right in the selection and use of the best brains in the market, that the merchant does the best goods, the lawyer the best clients; the doctor the best patients, and we have never admitted anything from any source, in the SENTINEL, that we believed reflected upon the honor and success of the Democratic party or the best interests of the public.
In conclusion, let us say that we court no rivalry, defy no opposition, but dread neither, but will in the future as in the past, conduct the SENTINEL as to us seems best, for the interest of the Democratic party and the good of an enlightened people. We are not conducting the SENTINEL with a charity box at our door. We propose to give value for value, and we say it in no spirit of defiance, but when anyone thinks that he is cheated in the trade of his money for the SENTINEL or any other patronage, he has only to walk up to the captain's office and settle.
