ELECTIONEERING.
No. III.

FOR THE GAZETTE.

WE have thus far endeavoured to prove the necessity of a perfect unity of sentiment and principle in the various departments of a government and endeavoured to shew that upon this principle only, could rest the prosperity and glory of a people. We have also advanced, what to us appears the likeliest method of obtaining so desirable an end. We may proceed still farther and say that, it is the only method. Need we urge this point? Need we shew that this alone can insure us tranquility? have we forgot that, "United we stand; divided we fall." Is it possible that we can doubt the truth of this? No, Citizens of N. Hampshire, it cannot be.--And yet you are so far forgetful of your real interests as to hear with seeming unconcern that you sanction and support these measures. Whence this neglect? Awake from that dangerous state of inactivity.-- Remember that " he who is not for us is against us." Consider that by the conduct you have hitherto pursued, you have given additional strength & energy to the machinations of the enemies of your constitution, your laws & yourselves. Be no longer the dupes of that designing and malicious faction, no longer bear the shackles they have put upon you--rent them asunder ; resume your native & original freedom, remove the mask under which they have but too long concealed their villainy. We say " remove the mask" for this only has hid their deformity, covered their treachery and aided them to impose upon the credulous and shallow minded. Yes, whilst they pretend to be animated by the purest motives and to have nothing more at heart than the prosperity and happiness of the people, with whose interests they are entrusted; whilst they would persuade you that they are strenuous advocates of the constitution ; (the only sure foundation upon which the interest of the nation can rest with any degree of safety)whilst they pretend to these and many things, believe them false. It may possibly be asked, why you ought to believe them false ? It is yet fresh to the memory of all and they can recollect those measures which were adopted in and characterized the reign of John Adams. What Republican ? what true American, who duly appreciating the advantages and blessings of freedom and liberty, but execrates this reign. What man of common sense and endowed with the least degree of reflection, would presume to say but what John Adams waged continual war against the common interest of the nation ? who can deny the oppression of the people, over- burdened with taxes ? who could assign just motives for the burdens im- posed upon the nation ? who will dispute but what despotism, usurping the rights of freedom, was rapidly erect- ing itself upon its ruins? verily this was the conduct and those the motives upon which were grounded their plans. Plans, by their diabolical nature, and thus assisted by the most consummate and secret villainy, well calculated to satiate ambition and to destroy the fa- bric of your freedom & independence. But thanks be to God, their plans have been frustrated and you once more saved from tyranny and oppres- sion. Let us next consider, and let us do it attentively, that those very men whose designs have continually and but too successfully been exerted to prejudice your minds against repub- licanism (and republicanism with us as in other Countries is not a mere sound but liberty itself) are the decided advocates of that reign which proved so baneful to this country ; need I say it was the reign of John Adams ? Yes truly they do not merely advocate this system but secretly they are en- deavouring to re-establish it. Consi- der all this and add to it what your experience has taught you to know of this, and then if you please ask why you ought to believe the protestations of Federalists false, when they pretend that your rights and privileges are safely entrusted when in their hands? That none can with propriety contro- vert our assertions we are confident of. Let us beseech you then to be aware of these deceitful and despicable men and carefully watch your interest and guard your freedom. Be no longer the Slaves of this faction-a faction which aims at your destruction, and would leave nothing untried to ob- tain this end. Many of you have once already fought for freedom and have been rich partakers of its blessings.- You who have so nobly obtained and gallantly defended your country's and your own rights, will you tamely submit to become dependent & resign without a struggle these inestimable legacies, left you by your fathers, and become doubly precious, as being the gifts of the greatest heroes & the rewards of the most renowned valour ? Impossible. Awake from your lethargy ! Resume your former stand! and adopt those measures which the exigency of the moment demands. If your interests are not in safe hands the moment is fast approaching when you will be enabled to remedy this evil. May your choice then be judicious ! Having gone thus far into the subject we re- quet you to weigh impartially the character of John T. Gilman., Do this & with the same impartiality sound that of the candidate we propose, and we feel persuaded that you will say with us " who could make us sensible that Governor Gilman was as well calculated as the Hon. John Langdon, to be Governor of this or any other State ?" This question we shall endea- vour to answer in our next.
