One Republican and Four Candidates Out for Massachusetts Senatorship.
BOSTON. July 31 (Associated Press). -Five Massachusetts citizens have declared their willingness to wear the senatorial toga in Washington. in the belief that 30 years' service there is enough for Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and that he ought to be retired next March. But they have different ideas as to how this ought to be done. The matter will be submitted to the voters of this state at the primaries on Sept. 12, and they will decide whether Senator Lodge shall make a sixth appearance as the Republican nominee in the November election and which one of four Democrats shall represent the opposition.
Joseph Walker. former speaker of the house of representatives, is contesting the Republican nomination with Senator Lodge. He was at one time allied with the Progressive wing of the party.
The candidates for the Democratic nomination are Col. William A. Gaston, a banker and long active in his party; Sherman L. Whipple, leading attorney; Prof. Dallas Lore Sharp of Boston university and John Jackson Walsh. a former state senator. All are Boston men.
Mr. Walker bases his candidacy upon the argument that Senator. Lodge has "reactionary" tendencies and does not properly represent his party. Colonel Gaston in a recent address laid particular stress on opposition to the tariff bill which he said was "being forced through an unwilling congress under the leadership of Senator Lodge." Mr. Whipple in announcing his candidacy asserted that the senior senator from Massachusetts represented "the power of organized money interests" and had been "leading directly against the great swing of progressive principles."
Professor Sharp includes in his platform abolition of war. industrial peace. prohibition, low tariff. the independence of the Philippines and opposition to the soldiers bonus. Mr. Walsh has described himself as a political idealist who believes that all things can be better than they are. He has urged "liberal individual financial support" to the Democratic party which he said must become "self supporting."
As nominations for the primaries do not close until next month the lineup in the various congressional districts is not yet defined.
Gov. Channing H. Cox. Republican. is opposed for renomination by Attorney General J. Weston Allen. It has been the usual custom in this state to accord a governor a nomination for a second term, but Mr. Allen has pointed out that Governor Cox is the first Massachusetts executive to be chosen for a two-year term and asserts for this reason the precedent does not hold.
On the Democratic ticket John F. Fitzgerald. a former congressman and former mayor of Boston. Joseph B. Ely of Springfield. and Mayor Peter F. Sullivan of Worcester are candidates for the nomination for governor.
For the nomination for lieutenant governor on the Republican ticket the incumbent. Alvan T. Fuller. is opposed by Joseph E. Warner. a former speaker of the state house of representatives. Two years ago both were candidates for the same nomination and as a result of the campaign Mr. Warner brought suit for slander against Mr. Fuller, being awarded a verdict of $1 damages.
