Full Text

Jackson's Bear.—Fannie, the black bear which has been caged at Richmond Grove for a long time, has been shot. The bear was the property of O. C. Jackson. Six years ago Thomas Kennedy captured her, when a cub, in the mountains, ninety miles from Red Bluff. Knowing that Jackson was a lover of pets, Kennedy sent his bear as a present to the officer. Wednesday she broke her chain, and as soon as she discovered she was loose refused to allow her keeper to come near her. She climbed a tree at the grove, and growled defiance at all who approached. For fear of her injuring some one, at the direction of Mr. Jackson she was shot.
