Full Text

Extract of a letter from Morris-Town, Jan. 7.

The enemy have abandoned Elizabeth-Town. Our people have entered it and taken 30 Waldeckers and 50 Highlanders, and about 30 Baggage Waggons fully loaded—The enemy who had all the Jerseys, are now only in possession of Amboy & Brunswick—this is a great reverse in the course of a fortnight, to the British power—Whether they mean to collect their whole force at Brunswick & give us battle; or whether they mean to push for Staten-Island, and abandon the Jerseys entirely is matter of doubt—We shall make a move towards them to day, with a view to avail ourselves of circumstances—The enemy appear to be panic struck in the extreme—God prospers our arms in an extraordinary manner—there is to be an eclipse of the Sun to day—We mean if possible to attack the Germans as soon as it begins, and take the advantage of their ignorant superstition.—Endeavour to animate and awaken all ranks of people.—Let them view the distressed & lately subjugated people of the Jerseys, complaining of their property being wrested from them by the lawless banditti that have infested these places.—Husbands and Fathers being oblig'd to be witness of the lustful Brute ravishing the dear object of their affections before their eyes.—These enormities have been committed and will be again committed, where tyranny reigns uncheck'd, and uncontroul'd—May God give my countrymen to see those things necessary for their political salvation, & may he avert from their country the horrid calamities of war.
