What is this article about?
Mr. Sly invents cylinder cars for transporting grain, coal, ore, and liquids efficiently by rail. After initial patent papers burn in a fire, he reapplies on October 2, 1870, and receives patent No. 221,871 on November 18, 1879. The design uses rolling cylinders to reduce costs to under five cents per bushel from St. Paul to New York.

[Shakopee Argus.]
Mr. Sly was sitting by a table one evening upon which two children were playing car, with a large spool; and that suggested the idea to him of carrying grain, coal, ore and liquids in large rolling cylinders provided with wheels and framework. He kept thinking about it until he went to sleep, and in the morning made drawings containing all the details of the cylinder car.
Soon after, he made a model and applied for a patent, but his papers were burned in the patent office fire. A second application was filed on the 2d of October, 1870, and a patent issued to him on the 18th of November, 1879, No. 221,871.
Mr. Sly claims that wheat can be transported by rail from St. Paul to New York in his cylinder cars at less than five cents a bushel; if this is so, they will save from twenty to twenty-five cents a bushel freight on every bushel of wheat shipped from this State.
It appears reasonable to any person that you can roll a barrel of sugar easier than you can draw it on small wheels.
The rolling motion of the cylinders creates centrifugal force and that holds the grain stationary on the inner surface, and prevents any grinding.
By making the cylinders of iron the grain cannot burn; and in case of a smash up of the frame work, the grain is kept safe. The cylinders are ventilated, so as to dry wet grain while in motion.
They are a great improvement on the old box cars, for carrying grain, in a great many ways.

Story Details
Mr. Sly conceives cylinder cars for grain transport inspired by children's play, builds model, loses first patent in fire, reapplies October 2, 1870, patents November 18, 1879. Design reduces freight costs, protects grain via centrifugal force and iron construction, ventilates to dry wet grain.
