Mr. Editor or Agent;—Your package, enclosing blank notes, etc., was received on last Thursday, and as I have no further use for some of them (at present,) owing to a slight change that they have undergone since they reached me. I return them to you. You will find them fully "equipped as the law directs." and ready at the specified time, to enter into Book and Tract Stock.
As the opportunity is offered, do allow me to flourish a little in the line of boasting as to how easily I obtained the improvement on those nicely printed documents you sent me.
An excellent brother, after having the matter presented to him, began to assist me, by not only refusing to "sign" the first note, but also by paying me the cash ; and, then by signing the last three. His example was followed by another capital brother, and in a few moments half the papers were "used up."
Well, Sir, I began to look about on yesterday. and stepping into a legal gentleman's office, I commenced in a round about way—but before I got through, he asked, " Have you got all your papers filled out yet?" Being answered in the negative, he said, "Let me look at them," and without pretending to read them subscribed his name to four more, and remarked, as he rose from the table, " Now, you can fill them up."
I am thus particular, in regard to the last statement, in order to moralize to the extent of a brief paragraph. When professional gentlemen of position have so much confidence in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, as to be ready and willing to aid in carrying out the plans of moral and religious improvement, the Publishing House at Nashville and all the Depositories, may " hang their banners on the 'outer' wall," for the cry is, " they come, they come"
If I were not afraid of being charged with boasting, I would venture to tell you, Mr. Editor, what I did on last Saturday. And, indeed, as I seldom get a "puff," I will presume this one time. I got two hundred dollars, (in cash and subscriptions,) for the Publishing House and Depository in Charleston ; two new subscribers to the Quarterly Review ; two ditto for Home Circle; one ditto for Southern Christian Advocate; fifteen ditto S. S. Visitor, and collected $10 for Missions. This, altogether, is what I would call " striking a good streak."
As I suppose you have a supply of notes, you can send me enough for six more shares, as it may so turn out, that I may get at least ten shareholders. If, however, you don't want so many, please advise me of the fact, and I will stop. "But, and if," you will allow me to raise $1000 for the purposes specified, and I can do it, and you, Mr. Editor, don't say something clever about the successful beggar, you had better not—ask him for any more money.
PHILIP.
