A disgruntled would-be liquor purchaser in Spokane caused liquor stores there to close early Saturday night, after he was refused a liquor permit, Evro Beckett, chairman of the State Liquor Control Board, said in Olympia yesterday.
The board chairman said the would-be Spokane customer called up the liquor stores, posing as Beckett, "and ordered them to close, which they did."
But Beckett emphasized that his announcement that liquor stores throughout the state would be closed Armistice Day was no hoax. He said the closing is to permit the stores to readjust their stocks from the past week-end's heavy buying, caused by the announcement of rationing, which was effective Saturday noon.
Due to inability to get ration cards printed, state stores will continue to stamp individual liquor buyers' permits this week.
Becket said the cards probably would not be available until the first of next week.
