"You may now send property to this country with great safety, as it is clearly proved the French never can get possession of Lisbon. Massena and his army of 80,000 men are retreating with all possible celerity; the light troops keep up with the rear of the French, and have taken an immense number of prisoners, horses, &c. The French have destroyed towns, villages, inhabitants, &c. wherever they have passed, and also destroyed many of their own horses, which, from want, were unable to proceed; the carriages of their guns, which they could not carry with them, they have burnt and spiked the guns they were compelled to leave. Lord Wellington dates his last despatch at Oliveira do Hospital, and it is said he has since proceeded to Celerico."
