The good roads convention at Kershaw Thursday was a big success in every way. It seemed that every man, woman and child within fifteen miles of that place must have been there and there were hundreds from even a greater distance. We saw people there from every section of this county Chesterfield and Kershaw, and the town of Lancaster was represented by about 200. The crowd numbered not less than 3,000.
A splendid band of music from Columbia was on hand and Kershaw spread itself in the way of a big barbecue. 3,000 pounds of meats had been excellently barbecued, Mr. Dent, of Columbia, having been engaged to do it, and 1,000 loaves of bread and several thousand biscuits had been provided.
The four large beeves, 40 sheep, 6 200-pound shoats and several hundred chickens with the quantity of breadstuffs looked like a sufficiency for twice the number of people present. Kershaw certainly did herself grand and the $500. or more contributed by her enterprising citizens for entertainment on this occasion will doubtless redound many fold for the benefit of the roads in Lancaster, Kershaw and Chesterfield counties.
The speeches of Senator Latimer and Mr. F. H. Hyatt on good roads and how to get them were listened to with the utmost attention and the sound practical suggestions made by them found lodgment in many minds. The era of good roads has dawned in this State and such meetings as the one at Kershaw last Thursday will do much to seed it on.
E. D. Blakeney, Esq., presided over the meeting and introduced the speakers in his usual graceful style. Congressman Finley, Hon. W. D. Trantham, Hon. W. B. Wilson, Hon. Mendal Smith, ex-Congressman Strait and other prominent men of the Fifth District, occupied seats on the speaker's stand. The order was excellent during the day, but one unpleasant affair occurring, and it being occasioned by an impudent negro.
