The amendment which Earl Fitzwilliam proposed in the British House of Lords to the address in answer to the King's speech; and against the non-adoption of which he protested, is, to withhold approbation of his Majesty's efforts to procure peace, as offering to the enemy concessions which compromise the honor, dignity and interest of the British Empire. He appeared to wish a continuance of war till a monarchical government was restored in France, however distant the period. He approved of the British Manifesto at the commencement of hostilities, conceiving it to convey an assurance of that kind.
