Messrs. Dutcher and Wells-at the Opera House On Sunday Afternoon.

A large audience assembled at the Opera House on Sunday afternoon to listen to the parting admonitions of the two well known temperance champions of this city, Messrs. Dutcher and Wells.

After the opening exercises Mr. Dutcher was introduced. He spoke of the work that has been prosecuted in this city and plead with all who had been rescued to stand by their principles. In regard to his trip South he said: "If we can rescue one poor mother's perishing boy among the Orange groves of Georgia or the cotton fields of Louisiana, or the turpentine regions of North Carolina, and bring that brother to Christ, then our efforts in that place will not be in vain."

He asked for the prayers of the christian people of this community, that the work may be one of success. At the close of his remarks, which lasted about ten minutes, he was loudly applauded.

After a few words by Mr. Wells. Rev. Dr. Caldwell was introduced. He gave a statistical account of the production and consumption of spirituous liquors, and prophesied that in a day not far distant the whole question of eradicating the evil of intemperance will be solved through political influence.

Rev. Mr. DuVal then followed in a short address, showing the great amount of good that had been done by the temperance workers in this city. By contrasting the present with the conventionality of thirty-five years ago, he impressed upon the minds of the audience the high moral tone that characterizes the present condition of society. He said, thirty-five years ago at a session of the New Castle Presbytery, of which I have the honor to be a humble member, the preachers were entertained with whiskey at the Lower Brandywine church. That was the order of the day. This, mark you, was the last time. The ladies, nerved by the passionate appeals that were sent through the land from the pulpit of Lyman Beecher, voted that they would never again entertain a body of preachers with whiskey, and they didn't--the ladies, God bless them, if they did take the first step in the fall they take it in the rise. [Applause.] Mr. DuVal's remarks occupied about twenty minutes.

At five o'clock the meeting was dismissed with the benediction by Rev. Dr. Caldwell.
