Washington, Sept. 22.—An amusing incident, and one which for a time caused a careless paying teller no little anxiety, occurred yesterday at one of the New York banks. Mr. E. John Ellis, of Louisiana, who was on his way to Washington, stopped at a well known bank to have a draft of $1000 cashed. As the paying teller refused to pay Mr. Ellis the money until he had been properly identified, Col. Ingersoll was sent for and upon his arrival the money was paid over. Mr. Ellis, however, had no sooner left than the paying teller discovered, to his dismay, that instead of $1000 he had paid $10,000. The Colonel was immediately notified, and in company with Mr. Dwight Townsend, was just about starting out to find Mr. Ellis when the teller rushed in and, with a face radiant with joy, announced that Mr. Ellis had returned with the money, saying that he was on his way to the cars and did not learn the mistake until he reached the ticket office. The funny part of the affair was the first thing that Mr. Ellis said in the bank to the teller, which was, "Young man, you wire my wife a letter of apology for making me lose my train."
