Extract, of a letter—dated:
"Harrisburgh, Jan. 11, 1813.
"No business of a general nature was transacted to day, in the legislature, excepting the election of a state treasurer—William Findley, Esq. was unanimously re-elected for the ensuing year.
"Resolutions relating to the formation of a national road, were presented by Mr. Duane, a copy of which shall be sent to you. A resolution to enquire into the state of the public arms, and whether new arms ought not to be purchased, was proposed by Mr. Darlington: I hope that the colt may not have broken out before the shutting of the stable door. A resolution for giving a bounty to the first fifteen hundred men who shall enter into the United States army from this state, has been proposed in the Senate by Mr. Gemmill.
"It is very probable that there will be a considerable majority in the house of representatives, in favor of the passage of the bill for chartering thirty three or four banks. The operations in its favor have been uniformly carried on with a high hand, because a majority was at all times certain; those who have had doubts of the necessity or goodness of the bill, on the other hand, have had to contend, not only against a self-confident majority, but against the depression under which almost certainty of defeat placed the minority."
