Full Text

The Dissidents in Poland, as we are assured by a Gentleman who resided there some time, are all Members of the Greek and Reformed Churches in that country. By several Treaties, they are to be secured in the free exercise of their worship, in all the places where they have been allowed by the laws to have churches; they may repair these churches, or build them; but they are not to enlarge their extent; they are to be allowed burying-places, but the funerals must be performed, without any ceremonies, except what are permitted by law. Where they have no churches, they may have Divine service in their own houses; and the Greek Priests may baptize, marry, and bury, provided they pay the established Clergy their legal fees, &c.---The Catholicks, who are very numerous in Poland, having taken every method to abridge these people of their rights and liberties has principally occasioned the present disturbances in that kingdom.

Event Details

Dissidents in Poland, members of Greek and Reformed Churches, secured by treaties in free exercise of worship: repair or build churches without enlargement, burying-places with limited ceremonies, private divine service, priests performing rites with fees to established clergy. Catholics' attempts to abridge these rights have occasioned the present disturbances.
