ANCHORAGE—A contract for $4,812,102 for construction of extensive additions to the U.S. Air Force installation at Galena Airport has been awarded to Peter Kiewit Sons Co., Seattle, the Alaska District Corps of Engineers has announced.
The big project, which will build Galena from a minor Air Force installation into a base of major importance in interior Alaska, is to be completed by September 1956. Galena is located on the Yukon River about halfway between Nome and Fairbanks.
To be constructed at Galena are an alert hangar, a bulk storage warehouse, airmen's dormitories and mess hall, officers quarters, a water treatment plant, electrical distribution system and utilities.
The present runway, parking apron and hardstands are to be completely rehabilitated. The new tar-rubber pavement with its increased resistance to jet-plane heat and pressures will be used.
The work will start as rapidly as the spring break-up permits, probably within the next 30 days, according to Col. Carl Y. Farrell, Alaska district engineer, and will be pushed with all possible speed during the coming construction season.
