WRECK IN A FOG.

Serious Collision of Trains Near Kansas City—The Fatal Mistake of an Engineer.

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 28.—The fog yesterday morning was disastrous to Kansas City railroads. There were two wrecks both costly and one fraught with fatality.

A head end collision on the Kansas City, St. Joseph & Council Bluffs road between Murray's switch and Parkville between the northbound passenger train for Omaha, which left here at 7:35, and regular freight train No. 26, resulted in the fatal injury of Engineer J. W. Sager and the serious injuring of Baggageman B. O. Rearnough and News Agent F. R. Tanner, all of the passenger train.

The collision occurred shortly after 8 o'clock. Both trains were going at a high rate of speed at the time, and the engineers were prevented from seeing each other's trains by the dense fog that prevailed along the Missouri bottoms.

The official facts are that the engineer of the northbound passenger train had instructions to meet and pass freight train 26 at Murray's switch, the scene of the holdup of Conductor Cassel's train on the Burlington road and the killing of Brakeman Ed White by unknown highwaymen a short time ago. When the Omaha passenger train reached Murray's switch there was a southbound freight train standing on the siding. The engineer and conductor of the passenger train took this freight for No. 26 and continued going ahead at full speed. This was where the mistake was made.

The freight on the siding was No. 18 an extra train that was making the best time it could between switches. The regular 26 had left Parkville, and the engineer was making the run to Murray's switch to meet the passenger. The collision occurred about midway between the points mentioned.

Two coaches containing the injured and as many of the passengers as wished to return reached the union depot at 10 o'clock.
