THE CAUSE OF THE EMBARGO REMOVED
The United States triumphant! and haughty Britain on her marble bones!
With inexpressible pleasure we herewith communicate to our readers the important intelligence that Great Britain, after all her insolence and haughtiness to this country—
After having rejected our overtures of peace, and spurned our messengers of conciliation, is, in her turn, supplicating our mercy and suing for terms of amity. How must the heart of every friend of the administration beat with joy and rapture when he reflects that the embargo, that much abused and insulted measure, was the strong weapon that humbled the pride of our enemies. Yes, party-spirit may now silence its serpent tongue, for its malignant falsehoods will no more be heard. The friends of England, whose participation in the national councils of this country have disgraced us as a people, may now close their lips forever—John Bull has been starved, not beat into submission—And a great and mighty victory is obtained under the mild aspect of peace. Let those who cavil about the wisdom and intelligence of the late administration, now view their own ignorance and stupidity. Let the friends of the people who would rather subject them to temporary privations than shed their blood in a useless and unprofitable contest, now bear the palm to which their fortitude and intelligence entitles them.—Let all America rejoice that Jefferson presided, and that Madison now presides—That they who accomplished the victory are permitted to guide it to the peace, the happiness, and the prosperity of our country—That the accursed faction, whose malignity thwarted every measure calculated to preserve, and whose restless ambition threatened us with the horrors of a civil war, by sowing sedition and rebellion in the Eastern States, is at length reduced to the necessity of approving what but a few days since, they affected to detest.—The triumph of America over her enemies is poison to their hopes!
