I begin to suspect I have been completely mistaken in my ideas, respecting the unfavourable appearance of the politicks of this country, and my expectation that those of the United States would grow better—I believe the very reverse will be the case: for in America, I can neither perceive an improved system of government or an increase of commerce; and the publick faith seems to have no other consequence but the name. We are growing better here daily—our funds are rising—commerce flourishes—the course of Exchange is in our favour from all parts of the world—the taxes are efficient in almost every class, and super abundant in many: the revenue is reformed, and further improvements are in contemplation—Smuggling, that bane to commerce, and canker to the constitution, is almost annihilated; and all this reform is from the abilities of a young man not twenty-five years of age.
