Testimonials Vow Support Of Thomas E. Dewey

GOP Leaders Plot Victory For November

CHICAGO (ANP)—Testimonials voicing support of Gov. Thomas E. Dewey, GOP presidential nominee, and the Republican cause were made here last week during a Republican conference of Negro GOP politicians, representing various parts of the middlewest and southern areas.

The New York governor was endorsed as a supporter "in the cause of the free man."

Dr. S. D. Redmond, chairman of the Mississippi Republican state committee, told the conference that "in such states where the ballot is not free, the Democratic party has disfranchised us."

Dewey, according to A. G. W. Sango, Tulsa, Okla., "have given more heart to the Negro than any candidate through the years. He seems bigger than partisanship."

Cornelius R. Richardson, Richmond, Ind., lawyer, said, "he represents all that is best and can be hoped for, regardless of race and color. The victory in November will be 10 times greater than that for Willkie in 1940. Treatment of our soldiers is such as to turn every thinking colored man and woman against the subterfuges of the New Deal."

"After the election, we will have under Dewey, a free country or if he loses, simply a land where men merely exist," remarked Perry W. Howard, a Republican national committeeman.

Roscoe C. Grant, member of the Tennessee Republican state committee for the Nashville district, expressed optimism regarding the November election. He predicted Tennessee "would surprise the natives in November."

Others who attended the conference and gave Dewey testimonials in support of the GOP cause were Perry B. Jackson, Cleveland; J. Kinley Wilson, grand exalted ruler of the Elks; Charles A. Roxborough, Detroit lawyer; George W. Lawrence, executive secretary of the western headquarters and Roscoe Conkling Simmons, a national Republican figure.

"Nothing so heartens our cause," said Werner W. Schroeder, Republican national committeeman, white, "as the enthusiasm of our colored fellow citizens. They have always been able to sense sincerity and ability in men."

Samuel McKelvie, white, western manager of the Dewey campaign, said: "No man in our day and time has been as deeply concerned over problems faced by our colored people as Gov. Dewey."
