BOSTON, October 6.

Extract of a letter, dated Philadelphia, September 24.

I have just time to advise, that we have had no important action of the armies since my last. Both armies were yesterday marching up Schuylkill, about 25 miles above the city; Washington on the east side and Howe on the west, destined, 'tis supposed, by some for Reading, where we have large stores. An action is expected daily. We have very frequent alarms, and advices that the enemy are marching to the city, but are false. A few of the Enemy's Hessian and light horse, 300, crossed Schuylkill, near Col. Bull's, about 18 miles from the city, and gave us a terrible fright, and dispersed a few militia, who brought down accounts they were in full march for the city; but all is still, and explained this morning. The last of the enemy's ships are said to have passed Patapsco River, on their passage down Chesapeake Bay, on the 18th inst. but 'tis unknown here where the body of this fleet is.
