Full Text
—The girls who inhabit the houses of ill-repute in this city are not half as bad as the husbands and young men who visit these places. Some of these poor things would gladly give up their lives of wretchedness and sin, but who will help them? Probably not one in this whole city would take one of these women to their homes, and by kind treatment, try to win them back to ways of virtue and happiness. But the men, what of them? Society extends open arms, and receives them with smiles, and those who are not already husbands, we wed our daughters to. When good men and women will treat alike the bad man and the fallen woman, then and then only, can we hope for a change in these things.
