No doubt many of you have little folks in the family who constantly badger you with the request: "Tell me a Story". Do you take time out to comply with these eager requests? Or do you brush them aside with an evasive "Run along--maybe some other time. I'm busy now." What a shame to pass up such an opportunity to get closer to your youngster! Is your own childhood so far away that you cannot recall the enchantment you felt as you followed Cinderella from her place by the fireside to the wonderful ball? And have you forgotten how much you longed to taste the candy house that Hansel and Gretel found in the wood? "Oh well", you say, "Children read their own stories these days." That is very true. But even today's children yearn to hear stories-even the stories that they have already read. Especially if the storyteller is someone near and dear-or at least familiar to them.
Storytelling, you see, is made up of a twofold relationship: the teller and the listener and one, of course, cannot exist without the other. The close companionship and richness of contact to be derived from the telling of a good story is one that no parent should be without. There are, however, (and I fully realize this) many of you parents who would like nothing better than to be able to sit down with your children and either tell or read the wonderful stories that are the rightful part of every childhood. But I also realize that for one important reason or another you cannot find time for such an activity. Now I could make a flat statement and say, "Just take the time". But I won't be that harsh. I've a much better suggestion. Why not let your youngsters come to the Story Hour at Roosevelt Branch Library every Saturday afternoon?
The members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority have recognized the need for such a story hour among the children of our community and they have arranged a varied and exciting group of stories which will be told by various members of their group. The story telling period will, at times, be supplemented by a period of supervised reading. This Saturday, April 9. Miss Mary Adamson, a primary teacher at Roosevelt School, will conduct the first in the series. Tell your children about it, won't you?
