Holmes College Duties
By WILLIAM CATHEY
Lloyd Thomas, basketball coach
at Holmes Junior College for three
years, 1938-39, 1940-41 and 1941-
42, and baseball pilot during the
1940 campaign has handed in his
resignation, effective at the close of
the past school term, after enjoying
great success in his various capaci-
ties.
Beginning as football mentor back
in 1938, Thomas surrendered this
job the ensuing year to Ras Branch
and took over the hardwood super-
vision. In the opening season under
his direction the Bulldog quintet
won 16 games and lost 8. In 1940-
41 the squad won 21 games and
suffered 9 setbacks and in 1941-
42, the banner year, Thomas steered
the Holmes' lads to the coveted State
Junior College championship with
triumphs over Decatur, 44 to 37,
Ellisville, 41 to 30, in a sensational
and incomparable fray, and Scooba,
42 to 36, in the deciding clash.
Not only adept in handling cage
performers, Thomas showed his forte
farther in leading the Goodman dia-
mond outfit to recognition in the
year 1940 when the team captured
the state crown by beating Poplar-
ville Wildcats, 3 to 1.
He came to the Holmes' institu-
tion after coaching in the northeas-
tern part of the state around the
neighborhood of Potts Camp where
he developed many outstanding bas-
keteers. At this writing no word has
been received as to what new duties
he will assume, but his many friends
wish him the best luck possible in
the days and months to come.
