of the Late Campaign-

A good story, which is fully vouched for, illustrative of the kindness of public men for each other is told regarding Governor Taylor, of Tennessee, and Gov. MacCorkle, of West Virginia.

Governor Taylor was assisting Colonel MacCorkle in his terrific campaign for the Governorship, and one day in Marion county, after two tremendous meetings, the two went to their hotel about one o'clock and retiring to the same bed engaged in conversation.

Governor MacCorkle referred to Governor Taylor's lecture on "The Fiddle and the Bow," and said he would go a hundred miles to hear it. "Turn on the gas," says Taylor, "and pull down the cover." The gas was turned on and with two pillows for a stand, Colonel Taylor proceeded to give the famous lecture. A number of people hearing the sound of the Governor's voice, quietly went to the hall and opening the door of the room, saw a peculiar sight. Stretched upon the bed was the big, brawny form of the West Virginian, while, on his knees beside him was the Tennesseean, with his arms and hands in gesticulation; with his eyes flashing and bent intently upon the eyes of the West Virginian, with his magnificent voice in beautiful play with all the fervor which he would have had had he been addressing a thousand people. When it was over, MacCorkle remarked: "Governor, that's a mighty fine lecture, but sing that song again," and then, at two o'clock in the morning the quietly assembled audience at the door and on the outside, heard the magnificent voice of Governor Taylor, as he sang to his companion his beautiful song, "Of the Olden Days." When the song was over the quietly peeping crowd witnessed the two men, who, just a few hours before had been engaged in fiercest political foray upon the stump, turn over upon the bed and lay down to sleep like children.
