Full Text

PHILADELPHIA, May 31.—A detachment of United States' troops, consisting of nearly three hundred men, left Province Island for Council Bluffs, via Pittsburgh and St. Louis on Tuesday, the 27th inst. The writer of this paragraph enjoyed an accidental opportunity of witnessing, and takes great pleasure in testifying to the admirable disposition and excellent discipline prevailing in this body of troops destined to a distant point, which the step of civilization has scarcely reached. They moved onwards with a deep unimpaired sense of duty, and a buoyancy of spirit, the legitimate offspring of their feelings. The commanding officer, capt. Fowle, is accompanied and aided in his arduous duties by Lieutenants M'Cabe Mitchell, Rogers and Vinton, all of whom, we understand, are well qualified to the task. We are at this point, and in allusion to the above named gentlemen, led to advert to the capacities at large of a body, the individual members of which, chosen thus fortuitously, are capable of reflecting the highest credit upon whatever scenes of life may hereafter be reserved for them.
