A four-engine Navy transport of Air Transport Squadron Five based at Kodiak flew an engine, tools and mechanics from Fleet Aircraft Squadron 114 to Point Barrow to assist in the Navy operation Ski Jump Tuesday.
Rear Admiral E. A. Cruise, commander Alaskan Sea Frontier, ordered the plane, men and material to Ski Jump headquarters upon receipt of a message from Cmdr. V. J. Coley, officer-in-charge of Ski Jump.
Cmdr. Coley requested assistance after a Navy Neptune Patrol Bomber returned to Point Barrow on one engine after attempting to help establish station number two of Ski Jump 800 miles north of Point Barrow.
The Neptune lost an engine while seeking a rendezvous with the Navy's R4D "flying lab" which landed on a big "floating ice island" in the Arctic.
Rear Adm. Cruise is responsible for operational control and logistic support of Ski Jump.
